All materials displayed or otherwise accessible through this Equinor / IMR Ocean Observatory (the “Web site”), including, without limitation, data, news articles, text, photographs, images, illustrations, audio clips, video clips, computer software and code (collectively, the “Materials”) are protected under Norwegian laws, and are owned by Equinor. Equinor keeps and provides metadata on ALL aspects of the data, including instrument details, configurations, calibrations, deployment locations and quality status. These metadata are available on our system and usually are provided with any downloaded data product.


The Materials on this site are covered by the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA license in conformity with the creative commons by 3.0 no.

In addition to such license terms, the following conditions apply to publication of work based on the use of the Material:
  • Equinor and IMR must be briefly informed of any planned publication. Please address publication plan to Equinor’s webmaster at: fg_oceanobservatory_hovden@equinor.com and to IMR’s contact person geir.pedersen@hi.no, with the phrase “Planned publication”.
  • Published Material shall be cited as suggested under. It is important to include the download date in citations since data may be subject to later re-calibration.

Although the greatest care has been taken in recording and compiling the Material contained in this the “Web site”, Equinor does not and cannot guarantee its accuracy. Anyone using the information from this Web site does so at his or her own risk; any loss arising from the use of information on this Web site is the sole responsibility of the user. Equinor/IMR underline that access delays due to data quality or technical issues might be experienced, particularly during the initial period of operation.


The Material are recorded and compiled by Equinor for the purpose of providing visitors and users with direct access to information about natural processes in the LoVe marine ecosystem, in order to increase knowledge and understanding of these. Equinor has an equal access policy, promoting equal access to the Material in near real time, including its Web site, for everyone. “Near real time” in that context shall mean access to the Material with 24 hours delay on data downloads (not on current conditions as is). However, Equinor may withhold some data from the public for specific reasons:

  • Preliminary data with quality issues still under review;
  • Commercial data

The exceptions to near real time are:

  • Testing and development of new technology for the purpose of real time integrated environmental monitoring of E&P activities
  • Technology qualification of prototypes for industrial use
  • Some complex data are only ingested once a day and therefore may experience a delay;
  • Hydrophone data may in some periods be subject to screening by the Norwegian navies for national security reasons and may be diverted prior to archiving. Most diverted data are later returned.

The server log some information about Internet traffic on its web pages. While Equinor makes no attempt to link the information captured to the identity of individual visitors, these logs capture aggregate, generic, non-personal identifying information about visitors such as:

  • The Internet domain and Internet Protocol (“IP”) address from which you access its website;
  • The type of browser and operating system used;
  • The date and time you accessed our websites;
  • The uniform resource locator (URL) of the pages you visit;
  • If you linked to its website from another website, the address of that website; and
  • Your general geographical location.

Equinor uses this information to help it make its website more useful to users by learning about the number of visitors, and by monitoring traffic patterns and the types of technology used. The statistical information may also be collected for audit purposes. Equinor does not track or record information about specific individuals and their visits unless voluntarily agreed upon. In some cases, the Internet domain or IP address of visitors could allow for individual identification, depending on the naming standards followed by your Internet service provider. If this concerns you, you may wish to ask them about their policies and practices. Visitor information is not disclosed to anyone except to Equinor personnel who need the information for legitimate business purposes such as responding to a request, to deal with attempts to damage the site, or to respond to inappropriate behaviour on the part of a user.


To use certain features of the Web site (including getting access to data), you may be asked to register with the Web site. You agree: (i) to provide true, accurate, current and complete information about yourself as prompted by any registration form; and (ii) to maintain and promptly update the information you provide to keep it true, accurate, current and complete. If Equinor has reasonable grounds to suspect that such information is untrue, inaccurate, not current or incomplete, Equinor has the right to suspend or terminate your access to and use of its Web site (or any portion thereof). Equinor’s use of any personally identifying information you provide as part of the registration process is governed by the terms of Equinor’s Privacy Policy set in Article 5. The personal information is collected directly from registered users either through email or an online form. The personal information provided by registered users is related to and is necessary for the operating program of Equinor. Equinor may collect and use this information to:

  • customize some of the content displayed,
  • respond to inquiries and requests,
  • contact users regarding events or new services available,
  • improve information,
  • identify (with the user’s name) any contributions made to the Web site, such as forum comments, video or data annotations, file uploads etc,
  • compile aggregate reports to funding agencies on website and data usage (without including any personal information in these reports).

Equinor does not sell, rent or lease user information to third parties. Equinor does not collect sensitive personal information, such as race, religion, or political affiliations. Equinor may access and/or disclose volunteered personal information if required to do so by law. Equinor may also access and/or disclose personal information under the following circumstances:
(a) to comply with a legal requirement including but not limited to one imposed by a warrant, subpoena, court order or like instrument;
(b) where Equinor has reasonable grounds to believe that such access or disclosure is necessary to prevent or investigate any breach of an agreement or contravention of a law; or
(c) in urgent circumstances to protect the life, health or security of any person.


To use certain features of the Web site, you may also need a username and password, which you will receive through the Web site registration process. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of the password and account, and are responsible for all activities that occur under your password or account. You agree to notify Equinor immediately of any unauthorized use of your password or account or any other breach of security, and to ensure that you exit from your account at the end of each session. Equinor cannot and will not be liable for any loss or damage arising from Equinor’s failure or your failure to protect your password or account information.


Registered users can access, revise and delete their personal information via the Login web. This page also allows Equinor to specify which types of personal information can be shared with other users. If you wish to delete your account, send an email to Equinor’s webmaster at: fg_oceanobservatory_hovden@equinor.com with the phrase “Delete My Account” in the subject line. Your account will be deleted within 48 business hours.


Equinor may terminate your rights as a registered user of the Web site (or any portion thereof) if you breach any term or condition of these Legal Notices. Deleting an account consists in removing all data that would allow tracing a particular profile to a specific individual. Fields such as first name, last name, email address, and optionally introduced contact information such as the street address are removed from the database. For statistical purposes and to maintain a link between contributed content (such as forum comments, video or data annotations, file uploads etc) and its source, Equinor will keep an anonymous identification number in lieu of a name for input received from individuals who have elected to delete their account.


The Web site contains links to third party web sites. These links are provided solely as a convenience to you and not as an endorsement by Equinor of the contents of such third-party sites. Equinor is not responsible for the content and the privacy practices of other web sites, nor does it make any representation or warranty of any kind regarding any third-party site including, without limitation, (i) any representation or warranty regarding the legality, reliability, completeness, timeliness, suitability of any content on any third-party web site; (ii) any representation or warranty regarding the mechantability or fitness for a particular purpose of any material, content, software, goods or services located at or made available through such third-party web sites; or (iii) any representation or warranty that the operation of the third-part web sites will be uninterrupted or error free, that defects or errors in such third-party websites will be corrected or that such third-party web sites will be free from viruses or other harmful components. A cookie is a small piece of text information that is sent to your browser when you access a web site. Your browser will return this cookie information to the domain where the cookie originated.
